One of the things i love and which inspire me most are old sci-fi movies, particularly old sci-fi Russian cinema which is something many people don´t know about. Many people think that some of the most popular "american" sci-fi B-movies from the 50s and 60´s where made in Hollywood when most of them were actually done in Russia and then dubbed into English by , for example Roger Corman who bought a bunch of original soviet sci-fi , added a couple bonus scenes filmed with american actors (Dennis Hopper for example) and then distributed the movies in drive-ins as being made in Hollywood, when in fact these were Russian movies at their core. Particularly regarding special effects. Hollywood was still playing with rubber monsters when Russia was already creating amazing special effects, which can be seen in movies like "Planeta Bur (Planet of Storms)" or "Road to the Stars" which are absolutely gorgeous to look at from a design perspective.
There´s a lot I could write about here about Russian sci-fi movie stuff, but , what matters is that the classic 50´s and early 60s movies made over there are one of my great inspirations when I want to create a sci-fi environment, love the rusty feel and all the classic rocketship design from that period. (Late 60´s and 70´s I don´t care at all, because all started to look drab and political).
So, this one was just a pic that i created and the goal behind this one was me thinking, how would a Soviet 50s sci-fi look if it had been produced with an Hollywood blockbuster money instead of being low budget independent european productions. And so i decided to create a really BIG space vista trying to retain the original classic rust feel from the period but expand it to a whole epic level.
This one was later licenced for prints to a company that sells posters and canvas and you can find it on amazon.
