Another re-invention of a popular theme. I love to create my own versions of known works and I mostly do this in between my regular children book work. I have the idea of creating my own illustrated version of The Wizard of Oz books for years and I guess this is me preparing to do so.
This was painted in photoshop.
Once again, a landscape because I really don´t care to much for character work as what really makes me love illustration is that it allows me to create the worlds not the characters that live in them. When I was a kid one of the things that I hated the most was getting a book set on a fantasy land and then most of the illustrations were about the characters that lived there and not about the settings, scenery and depictions of that world. I always hated when backgrounds were used just like that, backrounds to put characters on that dominated the page. My goal with all my illustration work has always been to depict these imaginary worlds , because for me in fantasy the landscapes are always the main character in the story, not the actual heros of the books , how they dress, how they look or whatever. I don´t care. What drives me to fantasy and sci-fi is the freedom to illustrate imaginary landscapes and so this is one of my own when applied to the Wizard of Oz.
